Little Known Car Safety and Driving Facts

Life is one long learning curve – sometimes we deliberately set out to learn new things and sometimes they dawn on us at the most unexpected moments. Here are just one or two car safety and driving facts which you may not know, you may have never known or you may have once known but have since forgotten, either way read on and you just might learn something.
At The Lights – stamping on the gas to make it through the intersection just at the point that the light is changing from green to yellow (amber) still won’t make you beat it. Okay, so it may save you a millisecond of time but that is nowhere near enough to help you to beat the light. Rather than hitting the gas which simply increases your fuel consumption while getting you nowhere fast, why not try to second guess when the light will change after it has been green for a little while so that if the light did happen to change you could stop or you could go. This is the most proactive method of dealing with traffic lights as they change.

Seat Belts – are designed to make you safer right? And they do a great job, right? Well, that’s all well and good just as long as you use them correctly. If you tuck a seat belt under your arm it can actually cause serious injury. A seat belt which is tucked beneath the arms can cause cracked ribs and damaged organs if the vehicle is involved in an accident or the driver hits the brake pedal a little too hard. In order to stay safe and protect your internal organs you must always wear the seat belt in the correct position over the shoulder. This also helps to keep your body upright just in case a sudden swerve is unavoidable.
Windshield Washers – there’s something you can add to your regular washer fluid which will help to clean your windshield and keep it bug free, and it’s something which every household will have in their kitchen cupboards. The magic ingredient is nothing more complicated than humble vinegar. Vinegar was used as a cleaning agent a long time before we started sprinkling it over French fries. Add around one third of a part vinegar to your washer fluid for the best results, if you add any more than that you may find yourself heading for the drive through a little too often, craving French fries every time you spray the windshield.

Driving Positions – there’s a lot of talk about the perfect driving position but did you know that the ideal position to sit is a minimum of 10 inches or 25 centimeters from the center of your steering wheel. This gives the greatest protection in case there is an accident which deploys your airbag. If you sit too close to the wheel and hence the airbag it could cause serious and unnecessary injuries if it goes off. If you sit close than ten inches it will also have a detrimental effect on how much you can control the steering wheel and hence the vehicle.
